Happy International Pineapple day! Beautiful outside, yummy on the inside- I love pineapple, this is one of my very favorite fruits. I actually have a pineapple decor piece in my office, and it makes me happy every single day. Not only is pineapple delicious, but also in the past few years, it became one of the most-known plant-based leather alternatives. The material, Piñatex, is made from pineapple leaf fibers. The pineapple industry globally produces 40,000 tons of waste pineapple leaves each year, which is usually burned or left to rot. Instead of burning and wasting those leaves, some Brands actually use this by-product in a conscious way while offering an amazing alternative to animal leather. Today is the perfect day to share some of those amazing brands with you, so let’s roll right into it!
Piñatex – Ananas Anam
Ananas Anam was founded by Dr. Carmen Hijosa, who developed this amazing material. She began her journey as a consultant in the leather goods industry in the Philippines back in the 1990s. After realizing how bad leather production is for the animals, the environment and for the people, she started looking for alternatives. Her vision was to connect people, ecology, and economics and to create a new industry that is good for everyone. She developed Piñatex, which is answering all the criteria she thought of.
Piñatex, the Pineapple leaf leather, is used to create bags, shoes, accessories, clothing and other furnishings. It’s breathable, flexible qualities allow brands to use it in many different ways, and slowly more and more people are exposed to this material.
